Wallpaper or paint: how to choose for the walls you actually have.
Both can look wonderful, and both can disappoint. The deciding factors are usually the condition of the wall, the humidity around it and what you'll want to do in a few years.

At a glance
Is wallpaper better than paint?
Neither is better in general. Paint is simpler to repair, tolerates humidity better and is easier to change later. Wallpaper gives pattern and texture that paint can't easily match, but it needs a dry, flat, sealed wall and can lift where damp is present. Choose wallpaper for a dry, sound feature wall where pattern matters, and paint for walls that see moisture, wear or frequent change.
Wallpaper vs Paint for Bengaluru Homes
Durability in daily use
Paint is a coating on the wall and takes knocks reasonably well, and scuffs can often be touched in. Wallpaper is a thin sheet, so a tear or a lifted seam is more visible and harder to disguise. Both depend on the wall underneath being sound, and neither is a substitute for a good base.
Humidity in Bengaluru homes
In a damp season, walls that back onto bathrooms or face outside can hold moisture. Paper acts almost like a barrier, so moisture collects behind it and can lift seams or grow mould on the back. Paint copes better, though it still can't cover a damp wall. If a wall has any damp history, deal with the source before choosing either.
Repairs
A damaged patch of paint can usually be touched in or repainted, though matching an old colour needs care. Wallpaper is harder because a lifted drop doesn't go back and a patch may show against faded paper. Keep a spare roll if you go with wallpaper, from the same batch if possible.
Wall preparation
Wallpaper shows every hollow and ridge as a shadow line, so the wall has to be flat, dry, sound and sealed. Paint hides less than people think, but it tolerates a wider range of conditions. Either way, filling, levelling and priming come before any finish goes on.
Removal later
Taking wallpaper off can pull putty with it if it was hung onto an unsealed wall, leaving making-good work before the wall can be repainted. Repainting a painted wall is comparatively simple. If you expect to change your mind in a few years, this is a real consideration.
Cost factors and when each wins
Paint cost depends on area, preparation and finish. Wallpaper cost depends on the material, the pattern repeat and wastage, plus the preparation and the labour to hang it. Wallpaper tends to win on a dry feature wall where pattern is the point, and paint wins on humid, high-wear or frequently changed walls.
Wallpaper vs Paint for Bengaluru Homes — your questions.
Can wallpaper go in a bathroom or on a damp wall?
It's a poor idea. Moisture gets trapped behind the paper, seams lift and mould can grow out of sight. Treat any damp first, and think about paint for walls that stay humid.
Will removing wallpaper damage my wall?
It can, especially if the paper was hung on unsealed putty. We test a small area first and tell you what making good is likely, so it's in the quotation and not a surprise.
Is paint always cheaper than wallpaper?
Not always, because both depend on area, material and preparation. For a single feature wall the comparison can be close, and a whole home in wallpaper is a very different job. An itemised quotation lets you compare like for like.
Can I paint over wallpaper?
Generally not a good idea, since seams and pattern can show through and the paper may lift under the paint. Stripping it and preparing the wall gives a better result. We'd assess the wall before advising.
