At a glance
What does interior wall painting involve?
Interior painting covers the walls and ceilings inside your home. The visible part is two coats of emulsion, but most of the work happens underneath it: checking the surface, repairing cracks, levelling with putty, sanding and priming. We normally work room by room so the rest of the house stays usable.
When this is the answer, and when it is not.
Sending you to the wrong service wastes your money and our time. This is how to tell.
This is likely right if
- The walls are sound but the finish looks tired, marked or dated
- You are changing colour and want it done cleanly, with proper cutting-in
- A room has been repaired or altered and needs bringing back to one finish
- You want a washable finish in a kitchen, hallway or child's room
Something else comes first if
- There is active damp or a leak, which needs the source traced first
- Plaster is hollow or falling away, which is a repair job before it is a painting job
- The wall is being replastered as part of other building work
What the service includes.
Surface assessment
We check each wall for cracks, hollow plaster, chalky old coatings and moisture before agreeing what preparation it needs.
Protection and masking
We move furniture to the centre and cover it, sheet the floors, and mask the skirting, switches, sockets and frames.
Repair and levelling
Cracks opened and filled, putty applied where the surface needs levelling, then sanded back true.
Primer
Chosen for the substrate and for what is already on the wall, not applied as a formality.
Finish coats
Applied to the agreed specification, with edges cut in by hand and the coat count stated in your quotation.
Cleanup and touch-ups
The site is cleaned at the end of each day, and we do a final walkthrough with you to list and close anything outstanding.
Not included, or quoted separately
- Structural repair, or any work needing a structural engineer's opinion
- Plumbing or electrical work behind a wall
- Waterproofing and damp source treatment, quoted separately
- Furniture dismantling, and moving heavy or fragile items
- Deep cleaning beyond removing our own debris
The sequence.
Inspection and measurement
We measure the paintable area and assess the condition of each surface. This is what the quotation is built from.
Colour and finish approval
Samples on your own wall, looked at in daylight and under your own lights before you commit.
Protect the room
Covering, sheeting and masking before any tool comes out.
Prepare the surface
Scraping, crack repair, putty, sanding and priming: the stage that decides how the finish looks in three years.
Apply the coats
To the agreed product and coat count, cutting in edges by hand.
Inspect and hand back
We walk the room with you, complete the touch-ups, and put furniture back where we moved it from.
What moves the price on this job.
We do not publish a rate, because it would change once someone measured your property. These are the variables that decide it.
- Measured wall and ceiling area, not the carpet area of the room
- How much preparation the surface needs, which is the largest variable
- Whether ceilings are included
- Emulsion grade and how washable the finish needs to be
- Number of coats, which a strong colour change can increase
- Whether the home is occupied and furniture has to be worked around
Interior Wall Painting — your questions.
How many coats will you apply?
Usually two over a primed surface, but it depends on the substrate and the colour change. Going from a dark shade to a pale one often needs more. The coat count is stated in your quotation rather than decided on site.
Can we stay in the house while you paint it?
Yes, that's how we normally work. Each room is protected, worked and cleaned before we move on, so the disruption stays in one place.
Will you move our furniture?
We move furniture to the centre of the room and cover it. Please clear valuables, electronics and anything fragile yourself before we arrive; we'll tell you exactly what at the inspection.
Do we need to repaint the ceiling too?
Not always, but a fresh wall next to a yellowed ceiling tends to show it up. We'll tell you honestly whether yours needs it, and quote it as a separate line so you can decide.
How long does a room take?
It depends on the size and how much preparation the walls need. A sound room needing a recoat is quick; one needing full putty and levelling is not. You get a schedule with the quotation once we've seen it.
