At a glance

What are decorative wall finishes?

Decorative finishes go past flat colour: applied texture, metallic and layered speciality finishes, patterned stencils, wallpaper and traditional limewash. They usually go on one wall rather than a whole room. Because the effect leans so heavily on the light and on the wall underneath, we make a sample panel before you commit to anything.

Choosing a finish

Colour, sheen, pattern and texture are four separate decisions. Muddling them up is the usual reason a feature wall disappoints.

  • The room feels flat, but I do not want more colour

Texture and sheen change how a wall reads without touching the shade at all. In a neutral room, that is often the answer.

  • I want one wall to be the focus

An accent wall works when the wall is worth looking at: behind a bed or sofa, or a wall the room naturally faces. On the wrong wall it just looks arbitrary.

  • I have seen a finish but do not know what it is called

Send us a photo. We will tell you what it is, whether it suits your wall, and what it involves.

  • I am deciding between wallpaper and a painted finish

Wallpaper is quicker to change and better for fine pattern. Painted texture lasts longer and is easier to patch in one spot.

  • The wall is not perfectly flat

Some finishes hide an uneven wall. Others, especially high-sheen and metallic ones, show up every defect. That decides the preparation.

  • It needs to survive daily life

Textured surfaces catch dust and are harder to wipe down. In a kitchen, a hallway or a child's room, that matters more than the look.

How we work

Sample first, commit second

  1. We agree the effect, not just the product

Bring photos of what you like. We work out which technique gets you there, and whether your wall can carry it.

  2. The wall underneath decides what is possible

A decorative finish is only as even as the wall beneath it. Uneven, damp or previously textured surfaces change the preparation, and sometimes the choice itself.

  3. A sample panel on your own wall

We put the finish on a section of the actual wall, and you look at it in daylight, in the evening and under your own lights before you approve it.

  4. Applied by the person who made the sample

Applied finishes vary with the hand that makes them, so the sample you sign off is made by the person who will do the wall.

  5. Honest limits

If a finish will not sit well on your wall, or will not survive the way the room gets used, we say so before you spend the money.

Decorative Wall Finishes — your questions.

Can I see the finish before committing to the whole wall?

Yes, and you should. We put a sample panel on the actual wall so you can judge it in your own light at different times of day. Applied finishes look completely different on a small card, on a showroom board and on a full wall.

Is texture harder to clean than a plain painted wall?

Generally, yes. A textured surface holds dust and is harder to wipe clean than a smooth washable emulsion. In kitchens, hallways and children's rooms that usually matters more than the look, and we will say so.

Can a decorative finish be removed later?

It can, but it is not just a repaint. Applied texture has to be taken back and the wall re-levelled before a flat finish will look right, which is a preparation job in its own right. Wallpaper is far easier to change.

Which wall should be the accent wall?

Usually the one the room already faces: behind the bed, behind the sofa, or the wall you see first when you walk in. Walls broken up by doors, windows and switches rarely work. We look at the room and advise, rather than guessing from a floor plan.

Will a decorative finish hide an uneven wall?

Some will, and some will do the opposite. Heavier applied textures are forgiving. High-sheen, metallic and smooth speciality finishes pick out every ripple and patch. We look at the wall first, because that often decides which finishes are realistic.
