Rust treated at the source
What decides the cost of painting a gate or grill.
Gates and grills are quoted on rust grade and developed surface area, not on how big the item looks from the road. The de-rusting is usually most of the job.

At a glance
Why does a rusted gate cost more to repaint than one that just looks tired?
Because rust has to come off mechanically, back to sound metal, before anything is primed. Painting over it only delays the same failure. A gate with surface bloom is a straightforward job; one with pitting and scale needs considerably more preparation time, and that time, not the paint, is most of what you're paying for.
Measured by developed surface area and rust grade
A gate or grill's actual surface, bars, frame, both faces, welds, is several times its outline dimensions. Combined with the rust grade found on inspection, that's what the quotation is built from, not the item's height and width.
In order of impact
What moves the number.
Listed largest first. If a quotation is silent on the ones near the top, that silence is itself the answer.
Rust grade
Surface bloom, pitting and scale all need different amounts of mechanical preparation, and this is the single biggest variable.
Developed surface area
Ornate grills and bar-work gates carry far more actual surface than a plain panel gate of the same footprint.
Whether the item can be removed
A gate taken off and prepared away from site is often faster and better contained than one worked in place.
System specified
A basic enamel recoat is quicker than a full anti-corrosive primer and stripe-coat system for a harsher exposure.
Site containment
Blasting or heavy wire-brushing near a home or a neighbour needs proper containment, which adds time.
Access
An upper-floor grill or a gate on a slope needs more careful working than one at ground level.
Method
How we build the quotation.
There are no figures here because none has been approved for publication. What follows is the sequence, so you can check anyone's quotation against it.
- Each item inspected and its rust grade and developed area assessed.
- Old, loose or failed coating removed and rust taken back to sound metal.
- Containment set up appropriate to the site and its surroundings.
- Anti-corrosive primer applied to bare steel before it can flash-rust again.
- Finish coats applied to the agreed system and coat count.
- Exclusions listed: welding and structural repair, new hardware, hinge replacement.
Gate and Grill Painting Cost — your questions.
Can you just wire-brush and repaint without full de-rusting?
For light surface bloom, yes, and it's a fair way to keep the cost down. Once rust has pitted the metal, wire brushing alone leaves contamination under the new coat and it fails again within a season, so we'll tell you honestly which situation yours is.
Is it cheaper to take the gate off and prepare it elsewhere?
Often, yes, because containment and dust control are easier off site, and it can be worked without the constraints of your driveway or street. It does mean the opening is unsecured while it's away, which we plan around with you.
How much does an ornate grill cost compared to a plain one of the same size?
More, because the bar-work and detail carry considerably more developed surface than a flat panel of the same outline dimensions. The quotation is based on the actual area worked, not the size of the opening it fills.
