Gate, grill and railing painting, with the rust cleaned back to sound metal first.
Gates, window grills and balcony railings taken back to sound metal, primed where the steel is bare, then finished in enamel, so the rust is dealt with at the metal, not hidden under fresh colour.

At a glance
How do you paint a rusted gate or grill?
The visible part is enamel, but the real work is the de-rusting. We take each member back to sound metal by wire brushing and abrading, remove loose old enamel, degrease, then prime the bare steel as soon as it's clean, before dew settles on it overnight and the fresh surface flash-rusts. Finish coats go on after that, with the recoat interval respected.
When this is the answer, and when it is not.
Sending you to the wrong service wastes your money and our time. This is how to tell.
This is likely right if
- The gate, grill or railing has surface rust, chalked enamel or flaking patches, but the sections are still solid
- Balcony or staircase railings are streaking rust down the wall below and need cleaning back and recoating
- Newly fabricated steel has arrived in shop primer only and needs a proper primer and finish before it sees a monsoon
- You are repainting the exterior and want the gate, grills and railings brought up to the same standard as the walls
Something else comes first if
- Sections have rusted through, or a gate post has lost metal where it meets the plinth, a fabricator must cut out and weld in new steel before any paint is worth applying
- The concrete around a grouted railing is cracking and lifting as the embedded steel expands, that repair comes first, or the new coat splits again at the same joint
- The metal is stainless steel, anodised aluminium or freshly hot-dip galvanised, which either should be left unpainted or needs a different pretreatment agreed before we start
What the service includes.
Rust survey, member by member
We go along every bar, weld, hinge and base plate to see whether the rust is surface bloom or has pitted into the section, and where rainwater is standing inside hollow sections.
Protection of everything nearby
Driveway, compound wall, glass, plants and parked vehicles sheeted and masked. Enamel spatter and rust dust don't come off a paver or a windscreen easily.
De-rusting to sound metal
Wire brushing, emery and a power wire wheel where the scale is heavy, until loose rust and flaking enamel are gone and the sound edges are feathered so no ridge telegraphs through the finish.
Degreasing before primer
Hinge oil, hand grease and road grime wiped off with solvent. Primer bonds to metal, not to the film of dirt sitting on top of it.
Primer on every bare patch
Metal primer applied while the cleaned steel is still dry, with no cleaned section left standing unprimed, with welds, cut edges and the bottom rail given extra attention, because paint film thins over a sharp cut edge and a weld bead, and rainwater sits in the bottom rail, so those are the places that lose their protection first.
Enamel finish coats
Brushed or sprayed as agreed, to the coat count stated in your quotation, with the recoat interval kept so the film hardens properly instead of staying soft and collecting dust.
Not included, or quoted separately
- Welding, cutting and section replacement where metal has corroded through, a fabricator's work, arranged before we paint
- Gate automation motors, sensors, intercom units, cameras and light fittings, we mask around them, we don't remove or rewire them
- Replacing worn hinges, rollers, latches and channels, or realigning a gate that no longer closes on its own
- Powder coating, anodising and hot-dip galvanising, which are workshop processes and can't be reproduced on site
- Repairing the concrete a railing is grouted into, and cleaning or repainting rust-stained walls below, quoted separately
The sequence.
Inspection and measurement
We measure the developed area of the metal, count members and check the condition of welds, bases and hollow sections. That, and how much de-rusting is needed, is what the quotation is built from.
System and sheen approval
Primer and enamel type agreed, and colour and gloss level shown on a spare member or an offcut of the same metal, looked at in direct sunlight, gloss on steel outdoors reads very differently from a shade card indoors.
Masking and containment
Sheeting the driveway and compound wall, masking glass, hardware and fittings, and containing the area properly if we're spraying, since overspray drifts further than people expect.
De-rust and degrease
Mechanical cleaning back to sound metal, edges feathered, then a solvent wipe. We plan this so cleaned steel is primed before it is left standing, rather than left to catch overnight dew.
Prime and coat
Bare patches spot primed, then the full primer coat, then enamel to the agreed count, with the day's work timed so the last coat has set before the evening damp comes down.
Harden, unmask and hand back
Latches and mating faces kept apart until the film has hardened, hardware unmasked, a walkthrough with you for touch-ups, and the written warranty issued with its conditions stated.
What moves the price on this job.
We do not publish a rate, because it would change once someone measured your property. These are the variables that decide it.
- The developed surface area of the metal, every face of every bar and section, not the size of the opening the gate sits in
- How intricate the work is: scrollwork, mesh and closely spaced members take far more labour per metre than a flat sheet gate
- Whether the existing coating can be abraded and overcoated, or has to be stripped back through layers of old enamel
- The extent and depth of the rust, since pitting means prolonged mechanical cleaning and may mean fabrication before painting
- Access, a compound gate at ground level against balcony railings on upper floors needing ladders, scaffolding or a safety line
- Application method and coat count, and whether the gate must stay usable and lockable each night, which splits the work into stages
Gate, Grill and Railing Painting — your questions.
Can you not simply paint over the rust?
No, and painting over rust is a common reason a repainted gate flakes again. Rust needs only moisture and air, and both reach it through a paint film and from the unpainted inside faces. As it grows it expands, and that expansion pushes the new enamel off in flakes, taking sound paint with it. The colour hides it for a while; it doesn't stop it.
Our gate has rusted through near the bottom. Will painting fix it?
No. Paint is a barrier a fraction of a millimetre thick and can't replace metal that has gone. Where a section has holes, thinned edges, or a post corroded away where it meets the plinth, a fabricator needs to cut out and weld in new steel first. We're glad to paint after that work, and we prime the new weld areas along with everything else.
Can you match our powder-coated railing?
Not as a film. Powder coating is applied dry and oven-cured in a workshop, which can't be done to a railing fixed to your balcony. On site we apply a liquid enamel or PU system and can get close on colour and sheen. It will look consistent across the railing, but it is a different coating that handles differently, and you should know that before deciding.
Can we lock the gate the same evening?
Enamel is touch dry long before it is hard. If a freshly painted leaf is shut against a freshly painted frame or latch, the two faces stick and tear apart when the gate is next opened. We plan the sequence around your security, usually taking the leaf and the frame faces on different days, or leaving the latch area until last, so the gate can still be secured at night.
Do you paint gates and grills during the monsoon?
Only when the metal is genuinely dry. Steel holds dew well past sunrise in Bengaluru, and primer laid over that moisture traps the very thing that causes rust. We start once the surface is dry, stop early enough for the last coat to set before the evening damp, and postpone rather than push a coat on when rain is likely inside the drying window.
