Exterior timing

When to plan exterior painting in Bengaluru, and why it's about dry surfaces.

Exterior paint doesn't care what the calendar says. It cares whether the wall is dry, and stays dry long enough for each coat to set. In Bengaluru that means working around the rain, not against it.

At a glance

What's the best time of year to paint the outside of a house in Bengaluru?

The best window is a settled dry spell, well away from the main monsoon months, when walls have had time to dry out fully. Paint applied over a damp wall can blister, peel or trap moisture. Plan the job so preparation and repairs come first, coats follow in dry weather, and each stage is allowed to dry and cure as the maker states.

Why the wall has to be dry

Masonry holds water like a sponge. If paint goes over a wall that still carries moisture, the moisture tries to leave through the film and pushes it off, which shows up later as blisters, flaking and patchy salts. A wall that feels dry to the hand can still be damp inside, so drying time after rain matters as much as the dry days themselves.

What the monsoon does to an exterior job

Rain interrupts work, but the bigger problem is what it leaves behind. Walls stay wet for days after a shower, algae and fungus keep growing on shaded faces, and a coat that gets rained on before it has set can wash out or spot. This is why the main monsoon months are the wrong time to start a full repaint of the outside.

The dry spell is for coats, preparation can start earlier

Scraping, crack repair, patching and cleaning can often begin before the driest conditions, provided the wall is given time to dry before anything is painted over it. Waterproofing repairs on the exterior and terrace edges are best finished before rain returns. Then the final coats can go on when the weather is on your side.

Why preparation and curing can't be rushed

Fresh patches of plaster, filler and primer each need their own time. Every layer has to be dry, and in some cases cured, before the next goes on, and the maker's stated times are the guide. Squeezing stages together in a dry week is a common way for a good-looking job to fail early.

Plan it with the association

For an apartment building, scaffolding, worker access and parking closures need agreeing before the weather window opens. If approvals are still pending when the dry weather arrives, the window is spent on paperwork. It helps to settle the schedule, the approved colours and the access plan early.

How we schedule exterior work

We plan exterior stages around dry weather. Inspection and quotation come first, then preparation and repairs, then coats in the dry spells, with the sequence adjusted if rain interrupts. If a face is still damp, we wait for it to dry instead of painting over it.

Can exterior painting be done during the monsoon?

Some preparation and repair work can carry on between showers, but full repainting is best kept for dry weather. Coats need dry walls and dry air, and rain can undo a fresh coat. We'd usually plan the finishing coats away from the main monsoon months.

How long should a wall dry after rain before it's painted?

There isn't a single figure, because it depends on the wall, its shade and how much water it took on. The wall has to be dry through, not just on the surface. We check it before painting and let it dry longer if there's any doubt.

Why does exterior paint peel after a few months sometimes?

Very often it's moisture in the wall, or paint applied over a chalky, dirty or algae-covered surface. Painting over damp or badly prepared walls is a common cause. An inspection can tell you which it is before repainting.

Should waterproofing be done before exterior painting?

If the wall or terrace is letting water in, yes. Paint won't stop seepage, and the damp will come through it. Fix the water entry first, let things dry, then paint.
